Chuka University Rugby RFC “Vikings” have won the Jeremiah Nyaga Technical Institute (JNTI) Tournament.
The rugby event held at JNTI grounds in Embu on Saturday, October 15, 2022, saw Vikings battle it out with four other teams from across the region to lift the cup.
Vikings opened up the scores in a 19-7 win over Mukiria in the first round, before thrashing the hosts in a comfortable 50-00 win in the second round.
Vikings went on to triumph over Embu and Nanyuki jackals, recording 26-00 and 28-00 wins respectively to seal and win the tournament.
Some of the names to the scoresheet for Vikings included Joseph Otieno, Joshua Nyarondi, Patrick Babere and Elvis Baraza, who displayed an outstanding performance during the tournament that had captain Rhodine Kahome applaud their display.
“We went to the tournament well prepared and the boys game it all. It was a team win”, he said.
Vikings Legend turned Coach James Mugendi hailed the team for bagging the first trophy of the season, saying their target for the season is to win the Central Region League and be promoted to the Championship.
“I am happy with the boys. We were basically gauging our fitness levels and to improve rugby in the Central region. I can say the boys gave it all. Our focus switches back to 15s where we play our 1st friendly next weekend at Zetech, who are a newly promoted championship side”, he said.
Vikings missed out on an opportunity to play at the ongoing Kenya Varsity League, that comprises of university rugby teams drawn from across the country.
Some of the teams include UON Mean Machines, Egerton University Wasps, TUM Marines, Kabarak University, JKUAT Cougars, TUK, DEKUT and KCA
