Government in top gear in elimination of illicit brew, regulation of alcoholic drinks sale

Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has assured the public that his government is on course to deal and completely eliminate illicit brew and regulate the sale of alcoholic drinks in the county to ensure more productivity.



Adressing a press briefing after a joint County and National government meeting at Chuka, the governor noted the emergence of notorious and rougue individuals had invented new schemes of operation .



Listed among the new schemes was the sale of illicit brew through bodaboda deliveries to specific spots across the county, after the government announced new liquor business licensing measures to aid the regulation of manufacturing, distribution, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages within the county.



"Since bars not authorized to operate have been closed, and restriction of opening hours to licensed ones effected, few bars open during the day by offering take away illicit and alcoholic drinks through the use of bodaboda. Any bodaboda delivering illicit brew will be impounded , and presented to court as exhibit", he said.



According to Njuki, unlicensed brewers have also changed to new brands that were not flagged by the county government, where he asked that all new brands that were not authorized by be inspected to ascertain that they complied to the set standards.



Njhki noted that some of the blacklisted brews were being repackaged into bottles belonging to authorized brands, while others were sold to the public disguised as water or beverages.



"The battle is not yet won but we have won a few wars, we still have some challenges. We are calling upon the community to assist with information and in enforcement of laws against illicit brew. Illegal brewers have become innovative and we have to play catch up", he added.



The Governor issued a warning to all licensed bars owners who were flouting operating hours saying their licenses would be revoked.



"If we get you flouting set rules, we will not have a choice but revoke your license. To the notorious operators who feel they are protected by part government, we are coming for you. Don't misuse the government name because you have a few friends in government. We will close your bar, take you to court and revoke your license", he said.



In his address, the Governor announced the cancellation of the license belonging to Palace Inn Bar in Marimanti for flouting opening hours.



Residents were also warned against criss-crossing borders to indulge in illegal drinking activities.



Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Wesley Koech said both governments would colaborate to ensure the county is illicit brew free and see the total compliance on laws regarding sale and consumption of alcohol.



"We are on top gear to ensure those licensed comply with the law. The law shall be enforced to the letter. All enforcement agencies and teams are working together to ensure the county is sober", he said.
