Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has taken a proactive step in safeguarding his county against the impending El Nino rains by commissioning a dedicated force of over 1000 Road Marshals.
These Road Marshals, part of the County Road Maintenance Team, have been assigned the crucial task of ensuring that roads remain in good condition and accessible during the potentially severe El Nino season, poised to surpass the destructive effects of 1997.
Speaking from his residence in Kajuki, Tharaka Nithi County, where he inaugurated the Road Marshals, Governor Njuki emphasized the importance of readiness.
He expressed concern over the potential damage to infrastructure such as bridges, drainages, and roads and stressed the need for preparedness.
Addressing the newly appointed Road Marshals, he stated, "In the battle for preparedness for emergencies, you (Road Marshals) are the front-line soldiers, and we are here to prepare you for war."
Governor Njuki also called upon other county governments to follow suit in establishing similar emergency response teams.
He highlighted that while financial resources are vital, having teams ready for immediate action is equally essential.
He urged counties not to merely plan the allocation of emergency funds in boardrooms but to be proactive in preparing for disasters like El Nino.
Furthermore, Governor Njuki shared his government's ambitious environmental plans, intending to capitalize on the rain by planting over 2 million trees.
The Road Marshals will play a pivotal role in executing this reforestation initiative.
The Road Marshals initiative is groundbreaking in Kenya as it is supported by legislation and draws volunteers from various locations.
Apart from receiving stipends, these volunteers will also enjoy yearly NHIF medical coverage, courtesy of the county government.
El Nino rains are predicted to begin in mid-October and continue until December, making the readiness of the Road Marshals even more crucial for the well-being of Tharaka Nithi County's residents and infrastructure.
