KITUI HONEY MAKING STRIDES IN RETAIL.

Kitui Honey is now retailing at Sarit Center, Nairobi. The honey, which is an initiative set on commercializing beekeeping for sustainable livelihoods is one of the projects under Charity Ngilu’s wealth creation agenda in Kitui County.

The county has invested in training beekeepers on honey making and profitable beekeeping practices to achieve higher yields and income.

“Welcome to Kitui sweetness. Made in Kitui will soon be a household tag. We have made tremendous strides in value addition. Our wealth creation journey is being told by deliberate interventions and verifiable results not empty rhetoric” – Charity Ngilu.

With over 5000 beekeepers, the county government projects a potential to produce 400 metric tons of honey annually which could translate to over Shs 80 million profits for the farmers and building a multi- million industry of locally produced honey.

Increased measures on value addition of honey have seen a boost in local markets and gradual entry into the international space with bee wax, bee venom, royal jelly and pollen being other products obtained from beekeeping.

Kitui County continues to register and train beekeepers on harvesting and handling of honey to ensure maximum returns.

Kamaki Beekeepers in Athi, Kitui is one of the cooperatives that boasts of successfully processing and packaging honey for mass sales.
