Parliament petitioned to protect Kenyans in the middle east

Amid the experience gone through by Brenda chepkemoi, a university student who went to the middle east to try and earn a living only to end up suffering, four petitioners have asked the parliament to safeguard Kenyan nationals in the region.

According to the four, millions of Kenyan women are employed in the household sector in Saudi Arabia and the large middle east and despite the vital role they play, they are prone to mistreatment and suffering in a inhumane manner.

The petitioners hence want the National Assembly to initiate legislations and summon the responsible authorities mandated by the law to ensure conformity with the constitution to explain the plight of Kenyans.

"The issue on respect of which this petition is made is not pending before any court of law or other Constitution or legal body. Pursuant to Article 94(1) of the Constitution, which provides that the legislative authority of the Republic is derived from the people and at the national level, is vested in and exercised by parliament, we ask the honourable house considers this petition,” the four stated.

The petitioners also note that every person has a right to petition Parliament to consider any matters within its authority.

Section 18 of the Parliamentary powers and privileges Act provides that Parliament or its committees may invite or summon any person to appear before it for purposes of giving evidence or providing information, paper, book, record or document in the possession or under control of that person.

The petitioners also added that both Kenya and Saudi Arabia ought to put measures to uphold human rights and promote the fundamental rights when at work.

All eyes remain on the national assembly to see their action on a rather disturbing subject in recent weeks.
