UNIVERSITY STUDENTS CELEBRATE STREET KIDS ON MASHUJAA DAY

Chuka University students on Thursday, 20 October 2022 partnered with Red Cross Tharaka Nithi Branch to celebrate, cook for and spend the day with street children in Chuka Town, Tharaka Nithi County.

The annual event dubbed “Chapati Forum” brought together university student clubs such as Young Life, Rotaract, Integrity Club, Clara Models, AISEC, Kenya Scouts Association and Chuka University Students Environmental Association (CUSEA) where they engaged in activities such as fun games, team building and fun cooking with the less fortunate kids in the society.

Through student financial contributions, the annual event has been successfully hosted since 2017, where the students spend time with street children every Mashujaa day, ensuring the kids feel wanted and important in the community regardless of their misfortunes.

Speaking during the event, Red Cross representative Mr. Rodgers said their main aim as organizers was to make the street kids feel appreciated and loved, saying many were falling into depression and needed such programs.

“We partner with other clubs and organizations, contribute, cook, share meals with the street kids and have fun activities with them. We educate them, help them showcase their talents and carry out mental awareness programs”, he said.

Young Life representative Victor Ondieki, called on the youth across the country to team up and organize such events as a way of impacting the community.

“As students, we may not have millions, but we can impact lives in million ways. On this day, we spend time with street children and help them in ways we can. I urge the youth to have such positive interactions in the community”, he said.

The organizers acknowledged the need to host more such events to create long term changes in the society.

They asked other groups and organizations to help and channel in their contributions in the future, to help reach out to the hundreds of street kids to help them feel wanted in the society.
