"We Are Ready for CBE": Academic Giant Ikuu Boys Strives for Greater Success

Top national school Ikuu Boys is prepared to welcome the first cohort of Grade 10 senior school students under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) program.

Speaking at the institution's annual education day, Principal Morris Thigaa expressed confidence in the successful implementation of CBE by the Ministry of Education. He emphasized that the curriculum would equip learners with the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to thrive in the modern world.

According to Mr. Thigaa, the school, renowned for its academic and co-curricular achievements, is set for triple pathway categorization and will offer all three career pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Arts and Sports Science and Social Sciences.

Double pathway schools will provide two of the three options.

"We are ready for CBE. We are prepared to receive students across the three pathways as we transition from traditional educational models to skill-based learning. Academic excellence and discipline remain our top priorities as we strive to uphold our status as a leading national school," he said.

The school is aiming to raise its mean grade from 8.6 in 2024 to 9.5 in 2025.

Board of Management (BOM) Chairperson Dr. Benjamin Kanga also championed the CBE program, highlighting its focus on students' strengths, interests, and practical skills.

"Students will now be graded based on their strengths, allowing them to excel in areas where they perform best. The system will also empower learners to create their own opportunities after school without necessarily requiring further training," he noted.

Parents Association Chairperson Nturibi Etirikia urged the government to invest in teacher training to ensure educators are well-equipped to deliver competency-based learning effectively.
