Tarmacking of the Chuka-Kaanwa-Kaareni has resumed, after the project, which was launched 7 years ago stalled in 2017.
Launched in 2015 by President William Ruto, then Deputy President, the project was expected to be complete in 2018 but court cases between the contractor and the national government have been stalling its construction progress.
Speaking during an on-site inspection visit on Tuesday 20th December 2022, Chuka/Igambang’ombe MP Patrick Munene said the 30-kilometre road had been divided into three sections, with each having a different contractor.
“Negotiations led to the decision to have three contractors, to fast track its progress and ensure completion unlike the previous contractor”, he said.
Mr Munene asked the newly assigned contractors for speedy completion of the project, adding it would open up Kathwana as the county headquarters and enable residents access important county and national government services.
The road after completion is also set to connect Chuka Town, which is regarded as a major economic and commercial hub in the county to Kathwana.
Estimated to be worth 537 million, the road is part of 159 kilometres of road set for tarmacking in the county, totaling to 6.5 billion worth of investment.
Alternative routes to Kathwana from Chuka are Chuka-Kawanjara-Kathwana and Chuka-Mitunguu-Kathwana, both 80 kilometres, with travelers having to access the roads through neighboring Embu and Meru counties.
Speaking during the on-site visit, Engineer Martin Wachira on behalf of the contractors said the road was expected to be complete within 12 months, saying the tarmacking which resumed in November was delayed to heavy rains witnessed in the county.
