Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has inaugurated the Governor Wavinya Cup, a mega soccer tournament in the county.

Collaborating with Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officials, the county government launched the event at Liyuni Primary School grounds, where the competition is geared towards involving 640 teams of young men and women spanning the 40 wards within Machakos.

During her speech at the launch, Wavinya expressed that the winners of each ward contest would be awarded KSh. 20,000, while those prevailing at the sub-county level would take home KSh. 200,000.

An impressive Sh. 1 million awaits the ultimate champions at the county level.

Governor Wavinya highlighted her administration's commitment to fostering young talent by offering them global exposure through sporting events.

She noted that her government was committed to utilizing sports to generate employment opportunities for the youth, subsequently boosting the economy of Machakos.

Wavinya also underscored the significance of the agreement she recently entered into with FKF to establish a national technical center.

She noted that the strategic move aims to transform Machakos into a regional sports hub, as outlined in her government's agenda through the Department of Sports, Youth, and Social Welfare.

The governor's vision is to revolutionize talent development by scouting prospects at the grassroots level, nurturing them in local talent academies, and presenting them on national and international stages.

This entails a decentralized approach that prioritizes comprehensive talent growth.

Wavinya's administration has taken steps to back youth talent by upgrading football pitches in each ward, having already completed 10 pitch upgrades, all intended to support young athletes.

Additionally, partnerships with universities, colleges, and schools are being forged to identify emerging talent and encourage a vibrant sporting culture withith Machakos.
