Tharaka Nithi Woman Representative Susan Ngugi has called for a robust government-provided victim compensation program to cushion disaster struck persons in the country.
Speaking at Kathareni in Mwimbi Ward (Maara Constituency) on Wednesday 5 July 2023, Ngugi noted that there was an increase in disaster and emergency cases in the county, asking both the National and County governments to revamp and properly fund the Disaster and Management program.
The legislator, who had visited two families in Mwimbi and Ganga Wards whose houses had burnt down emphasized on the need for post-disaster compensation through government relief from funds set aside for disaster and emergency.
“I am calling upon both the County and the National Governments to set aside a Disaster and Emergency Kitty, to help affected persons get back to their feet after a disaster”, she said.
In its budget for the FY 2023/24, Tharaka Nithi County allocated KShs 1,700,000 towards Disaster Management and Coordination with key targets for the program being disaster risk reduction, provision of fire services and disaster risk centres.
