Tharaka Nithi Woman Representative Susan Ngugi has urged residents to make concerted efforts to win the war on climate change.
The legislator underlined the government’s commitment to protecting Kenya from the adverse effects of global warming, where she campaigned for tree planting campaigns in the county.
“At the moment, climate change is among the top agendas of the government. One of the ways we can contribute to environmental conservation is by planting more trees”, she said.
Ngugi reiterated the government’s plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, halt and reverse deforestation, biodiversity loss and land degradation, asking the public to conserve the environment and ensure ecologically sustainable development and use of natural resources.
President William Ruto in December 2022 launched the 15 Billion Trees Growing Campaign dubbed Mission 15B, where he also launched the #JazaMitiApp which will keep track of all trees being grown countrywide.
The project is set to take the total national tree cover beyond 30 percent, and provide opportunities for the participation of youth and women in the tree growing campaigns by creating over 320,000 direct jobs in seedling production, tree planting and maintenance, maintenance of forest roads and fire breaks, community scouts, forest rangers and foresters.
Through the Kenya National Vision 2030, as well as the Constitution, the country is mandated to maintain at least 10 per cent national tree cover and restore 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes under the African Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100).
The Woman Representative was speaking at Nthima in Mugwe Ward (Tharaka Nithi) on Friday 07 July 2023, where she was overseeing the delivery of ten water tanks to Nthima NAALIP group who had benefited from NGAAF disbursements.
The water tanks will be used in irrigation of the groups tree nursery project.
