MP donates 50,000 menstrual cups to schoolgirls in his constituency

Bumula Member of Parliament Jack Wamboka has taken a proactive step in addressing menstrual poverty within his constituency by donating 50,000 reusable menstrual cups to schoolgirls.

Wamboka recognized that menstrual poverty contributes significantly to the high rates of teenage pregnancy in his constituency.

These reusable cups, crafted from medical-grade silicon rubber, offer a long-lasting solution and can substantially reduce the monthly expenses associated with purchasing disposable pads.

During an education day event, Wamboka affirmed his administration's commitment to collaborate with other stakeholders in the education sector to ensure that girls have the necessary support to stay in school.

He emphasized that these cups represent a modern and effective technology that can empower girls to attend school consistently without being burdened by period-related challenges, including the stigma associated with menstruation.

Wamboka explained, "Many girls cannot afford sanitary pads to manage their periods, leading to embarrassing situations and, in some cases, forcing them to miss school. I believe these menstrual cups are the ideal solution, especially for those who cannot afford monthly sanitary towel expenses."

One of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude, highlighting that the cups would alleviate the burden of seeking sanitary pads from her father each month.

“I have to ask my dad for sanitary pads, at times I feel embarrassed since this makes him know that I am on my menses. Sometimes I am forced to find other ways of managing my flow, “she noted.

This initiative is a significant step toward promoting menstrual health, education, and dignity among schoolgirls in the constituency.
