Chogoria, October 6, 2023 - PCEA Chogoria Hospital organized a significant Breast Cancer Awareness Walk today, with the theme "Walk for hope for an oncology center." The event, held in Chogoria, brought together the community to raise awareness about breast cancer and raise funds for a new chemotherapy center within the hospital.
Gilbert Mutembei, Chairman of the Chogoria Hospital Board, expressed the urgent need for these efforts, highlighting the prevalence of cancer within the Meru and Mt Kenya region. He emphasized that the hospital is striving to renovate space for a state-of-the-art chemotherapy center. Mutembei stated, "Our dream at Chogoria Hospital is to become the leading cancer center for the region and beyond."
Dr. Elijah Mwaura, CEO of Chogoria Hospital, shed light on the importance of early detection and awareness. He explained that breast cancer, though more common in women after menopause, can strike earlier, especially in families with a history of the disease. Dr. Mwaura stressed that late diagnosis remains a significant challenge, and raising awareness is crucial. He said, "Breast cancer is curable if detected in the early stages, but unfortunately, there is limited awareness."
Dr. Mwaura encouraged individuals to perform self-examinations for lumps, undergo mammography, ultrasounds, and routine examinations. He highlighted the importance of seeking medical advice for any unusual symptoms, mentioning that not every lump turns out to be breast cancer but that only a doctor can make an accurate diagnosis.
Chogoria Hospital reported that an alarming 25% of cases involving breast lumps in their facility are diagnosed as breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Awareness Walk stands as a crucial step in promoting early detection and raising funds to combat this prevalent disease within the community.
