Tharaka Nithi Woman Representative Susan Ngugi has called for the re-assessment of Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs) to identify severely disabled persons in the county.
While speaking at Weru in Maara Sub-County where she visited Victory Disabled Self Help Group on Monday July 3, 2023, the Woman Representative noted that many eligible persons missed out on the previous government assessment due to lack of information or inability to access assessment centres.
According to her, the government had set aside funds for cash transfers to severely disabled persons in the country, yet many were missing out on the monthly disbursements since their data was not captured in the assessment.
“Through my office we are going to carry out re-assessment in the county to ensure all severely disabled persons are registered and their data is well captured to allow them receive monthly cash transfers from the government”, she said.
In addition, Ngugi asked that Rehabilitative Medicine be identified as a critical department in healthcare services.
The Woman Representative insisted on the need to have proper funding of the Rehabilitative Medicine, to ensure the department was fully functional and well equipped to provide necessary and essential medical care equipment prescribed.
“Most of the essential medical equipment such as crutches and wheelchairs are often not available in hospitals and patients are often asked to purchase the items from other facilities at extra costs. As a Member of Parliament, I will sponsor a motion to see the funding and support of the Rehabilitative Medicine to help revamp the department”, she said.
Ngugi issued a cheque worth KShs 240,000 to the Self Help Group.
Young Shinners Self Help Group also received KShs 240,000 while Ruguta Widows Group were issued with a cheque worth KShs 238,000 through National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).
