Chuka University Vice Chancellor Prof. Erastus Njoka has found fault with Tharaka-Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki for suggesting funds set aside for elections be diverted to mitigating the drought situation in the country.
Njoka, who is eyeing the gubernatorial position in the 2022 elections ruled out the possibility of postponing elections, criticizing the current leadership as to not having the interests of the people at heart.
“Elections were set constitutionally and can never be postponed at any cost….it shows the failure of our government in solving societal problems”, he said.
Njoka went on to mention the county had adverse water resources and if measures such as irrigation were considered, the county wouldn’t be experiencing hunger issues.
“Tharaka-Nithi has about 12 permanent rivers, which when dammed can provide water for all residents in the county. Let us not talk of postponing elections or blaming the environment for the drought experienced. We should blame ourselves for failure in our duty to provide the basics to our people”, he added.
The university VC was speaking while at a series of tours in Maara subcounty, where he held tree planting exercises and empowerment programs at Kieni and Kaare on Saturday.
Prof. Njoka also pointed out his plans to industrialize the county once elected to office, saying he will make sure industries are built in every ward to provide job opportunities and as a solution to value addition in the county.
According to Njoka, Avocado and Macadamia industries are set to be established in 3 years’ time following his tree planting campaign.
