Tharaka Nithi Governor H.E Muthomi Njuki has downplayed reports that the county has a preferred presidential candidate in the 2022 general elections.
The Governor who was speaking at a seed distribution program at Kiang’ondu in Karingani Ward acknowledged that Tharaka Nithi is key to Kenyan politics through its numbers and that in the coming months presidential hopefuls will flock the county seeking votes in the race to state house.
“Tharaka Nithi is a Centre of Kenyan politics. Week after week the front pages of Kenyan newspapers will show multitudes at Chuka town as presidential candidates visit the county to ask for votes, and because the people of Tharaka Nithi are peaceful and good listeners, they will listen to and accommodate the leaders but on election day they will decide the best candidate” - Governor Njuki.
Njuki called to attention what he termed as being sidelined by the Executive, saying the government had disassociated itself with the county and that regions that did not vote-in the government were benefiting from projects, leaving out Tharaka Nithi that had overwhelmingly supported the government.
“It is better to be in the opposition and benefit from government projects. We will elect a national leader based on his manifesto and agenda for the people of Tharaka Nithi” - Governor Njuki
County politics were also in play as Governor Njuki went on to warn leaders who believed that Chuka Igambang’ombe subcounty, with the highest number of registered voters in the county would split its vote in the gubernatorial election saying it was better to lose an election having supported one candidate from the subcounty and that the people would not support a candidate based on their “chuka” status but because of their qualities.
The Governor went on to acknowledge that some elected leaders in the county have distanced themselves from county matters since election into office.
“Some of the leaders we elected have never been seen in the county. This time we will not elect leaders just for their good oratory skills”, he said.
The seed distribution program started in 2017 has made tremendous steps in ensuring food security in the county.
The program resumes next week with Mariani, Mugwe and Magumoni wards set to receive the seeds on Monday and wraps up on Tuesday with Igambang’ombe and Magumoni wards.
