Government collaborates with Private Sector in Internship Programme

Kenyan Government has collaborated with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) to initiate internship programs within the private sector.

This partnership aims to provide opportunities for 50,000 graduates to gain practical experience, addressing the unemployment challenge in the country.

The initiative, known as the Kenya Internship and Jobs Initiative (KIJI), intends to equip graduates with on-the-job training and skills, enhancing their competitiveness on a global scale.

Dr. Juma Mukwana, Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department for Industry, highlighted that KIJI will complement existing programs such as the Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) internship initiatives, which have absorbed 4,000 and 25,000 fresh graduates respectively.

Applicants can apply for the program through an online portal, www.kiji.go.ke, where private sector organizations post are available.

With over 20,000 opportunities already advertised on the portal, Dr. Mukwana emphasized that beneficiaries will not only receive a monthly stipend but also acquire essential skills for success in local and global job markets.

To ensure the program's effectiveness, the Government has established a comprehensive framework outlining industry expectations regarding working conditions, insurance, internship duration, and remuneration for interns.

Dr. Mukwana explained that the delay in launching the program was due to the need for a robust framework to ensure favorable working conditions for interns.

Speaking at a Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) workshop in Kisumu, the PS stressed the importance of aligning educational training with industry needs, facilitating seamless placement of interns in interested sectors.

He praised the private sector partnership and urged other industry players to join forces in reducing the country's unemployment gap.
