How wedding turned tragic killing 6 in Ruiru

A wedding ceremony took a somber and tragic turn at Fort Jesus village in Ruriru. Kiambu County when a group that had assembled to pick up the bride plunged into a borehole.

The scene was one of festive cheer as around 17 people danced and cheered in honor of the bride's impending union, when disater struck after the covering of the borehole gave way, plunging individuals into the watery grave.

Among the victims of the 11 Am incident were five women and a young child, whose lives were cut short in the horrifying incident.

Survivors of the incident were quickly rushed to various hospitals in Ruiru, including Plains View, Ruiru Level Four, and Kenyatta University Teaching Research and Referral Hospitals.

Kiambu County Police Commander Perminus Kioi reported that the collapse of the concrete covering was due to the weight of the celebrants, causing a catastrophic failure that led to their untimely demise.

"It appears that those who had gathered to escort the bride were atop the underground tank when, tragically, it gave way due to their combined weight. Regrettably, we have lost six lives out of the seventeen, while the remaining survivors are now under medical care in different hospitals within Ruiru Sub-County," Kioi shared.

In the wake of the incident, authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this devastating event. Kioi reassured the public that those found responsible for any negligence, inadequate construction, or other contributing factors will be held accountable through legal proceedings.

The wedding celebration, which had started with promise and joy, was instantly marred by the horrifying event, where witnesses and bystanders were thrown into a state of shock, prompting many to rush to the scene in an attempt to rescue those trapped.

Rescue teams, including fire brigade officers from Kiambu, worked urgently to free the victims who remained trapped within the underground water tank.

Simon Njoroge, who had journeyed from Mataara village in Gatundu North to take part in the celebration, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident.

He spoke of the palpable fear that gripped everyone in the aftermath and the lingering questions that remain unanswered.

"We had been waiting for the women, who traditionally participate in the bride's victory celebration, to finish their activities. Suddenly, we heard cries for help and later discovered the dreadful fate of those who had joined us. While our hearts are heavy with grief, the wedding must find a way to continue," Njoroge expressed somberly.

Despite the profound tragedy, the wedding ceremony between Charles Mworia and Susan Wanjira carried on at Wonders Touch Ministries International church.

The union that was meant to symbolize love and hope persevered even in the face of this heart-wrenching ordeal. The reception that followed took place at Ruiru Boys High School grounds, with a subdued atmosphere that mirrored the weight of the day's events.
