Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Norbert Jara Komora on Monday flagged off the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) peace caravan that toured part of the county in efforts to promote peace and cohesion ahead of the August 9 general elections.
Under the theme “Elections Bila Noma” NCIC urged the residents to maintain peace despite political differences to avoid electoral violence after the polls.
“Peace is a personal responsibility. Let all politicians and their campaigners ensure peaceful campaigns” – CC Norbert Komora
NCIC Officer Gitonga Mwikamba asked the public to be cautious while using social media, saying if not well used it could be a tool of incitement and hate speech.
“We will remain friends and family after the elections. Let us not be divided or allow politics to come in between us and how we associate with each other” – Mr. Gitonga Mwikamba
Prof. Lawrence Mbijiwe, who chairs the Multi-Sectoral Committee in the county emphasized that boundary conflicts should not be politicized, assuring the public that the disputes would be solved to see peace is maintained.
The caravan toured Chuka and Kaanwa towns, with scheduled stop overs in Maara on Tuesday.
