Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has attributed tough economic times to the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio la Umoja flag bearer Raila Odinga.
Speaking at Kirege in Chuka/Igambang’ombe Constituency on Wednesday, Njuki criticized the two leaders for the increased cost of living that has had Kenyans dig deeper into their pockets to afford basic commodities, saying that voting for a Raila presidency was only going to make matters worse.
“Voting for Raila, who is hiding behind Martha Karua is only going to lead to tougher economic times. Popularizing Raila in the mountain is impossible.” – Governor Muthomi Njuki
An Economic Survey released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics in May 2022 placed the country’s inflation at 6.1 % from 5.5% last year, with products such as cooking oil, food and fuel recording a jump in prices.
Drumming up support for UDA’s ‘bottom-up’ economic model, Governor Njuki criticized the government for borrowing loans for infrastructure projects, saying the increase in prices of basic goods and services was part of the plan to fund loan repayment.
“Projects such as the Nairobi Expressway and SGR are not generating income at the moment. Our bottom-up economic model will ensure we empower citizens first to boost the economy unlike the current model” -Governor Muthomi Njuki
