Tharaka-Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has criticized the National government for splashing money on election preparedness while people in the country are dying of hunger.
While speaking at Nairobi Ndogo- Kajuki in Igambang’ombe ward during an empowerment program, the Governor pointed out that Tharaka-Nithi had indeed received inadequate rains, leaving the people in despair and that it was improper for the government to fund election activities yet the country was facing starvation.
“It is wrong for the National government and leaders to put money into election preparedness especially civic education as people die of hunger. We had better postpone elections because if people are hunger struck, they cannot vote”, he said.
Governor Njuki lashed out at the government for excluding and not shortlisting Tharaka-Nithi as a county facing starvation, finding fault with the Devolution Ministry and the National Drought Management Authority while asking them to re-think and consider emergency relief.
“We usually receive rains between the months of September and December. Most of the parts in our county last received rains in the month of March. Let it be known to the President and the Devolution CS that Tharaka-Nithi is more hunger struck than some of the counties in the northern frontier”, he stated.
Igambang’ombe MCA Njeri Kigwarie in her speech asked Governor Muthomi to provide relief food to the residents who were highly affected by drought.
“Your people are facing starvation. The rains have not been adequate. I ask you to provide relief food to help them as they wait for rainfall”, she said.
The Governor issued cheques totaling to 23 million to Igambang’ombe Multipurpose Cooperative Society (IMCOS) and 19 other groups.
Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP) has also been able to help residents in matters climate change due to lack of rain and change in climate by giving alternative means of survival.
