The Government of Kenya is ready to enroll the youth in its 3rd phase of the Kazi Mtaani Program. In Tharaka Nithi County, a total of 12,929 applications were received, with only 4,643 youth expected to be shortlisted for the program.
According to the County Commissioner Norbert J. Komora, successful applicants are expected to work on a 9-day shift divided in 2 cohorts, with each worker expected to receive a pay of KShs 455 per day. The program is set to last 3 months.
The Kazi Mtaani Program was initiated to cushion the most vulnerable youth in informal settlements from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Its objective was to provide a form of social protection for workers whose daily work had been disrupted by measures meant to limit the spread of the virus.
“This next phase is set to last 3 months. The future of this program depends on the next government and its priorities. This program will go down in history as one of President’s Uhuru legacies” – Norbert J. Komora, Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner
The County Commissioner went on to ask the youth to use the wages earned from the program responsibly, to grow and empower themselves through savings.
832 youth from the county benefited from the program in the 2nd phase.
