Student leaders and representatives from Tharaka Nithi Comrades Association have cautioned politicians against using university students for political gain as witnessed in recent political meetings and rallies in the county.
Speaking during a press briefing, the association chairman, Dennis Mugendi warned political aspirants against taking advantage of the youth, who form a majority of the voting population and asked them to channel the energy into empowerment programs for the youth through allocation of funds and bursaries to support their education and livelihoods.
“We have an association that has a governing body, a clear structure with a mandate of representation and politics is not included in our agenda. Instead of taking advantage of the youth for their support and votes, let those politicians empower comrades through bursaries and job opportunities” – Dennis Mugendi, Tharaka Nithi Comrades Association Chairman.
Kelvin Mwenda, who is a student leader in the county accused students purporting to be representatives and members of the association of extorting money from politicians for their personal gain in exchange for support.
Earlier in the week, a section of students from the county accused National Assembly Speaker and Democratic Party Leader Justin Muturi of not facilitating them after a political rally held at Chuka.
“As an association we want to be part of government and politics, but if any politician wants to work with us then he/she should prove they can put the interest of comrades first and meet our demands as students” – Kelvin Mwenda, Student Leader.
Christine Kathure, a student representative in her statement called for all comrades to unite against cartels and politicians and ensure they are not being used to cause chaos and political disruptions.
