Tharaka Nithi County was on Thursday awarded as the Most Improved County in Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) during the Annual Stakeholders Workshop held at Kisii University.
The event under the theme “Nexus of Power of Information & Nutrition Sensitive Aquaculture” took place between 29th-30th June where best performing and improved counties were awarded.
The overall goal of the programme is to reduce poverty and increase food security and nutrition in rural areas.
In its first and second years, ABDP incorporated 325 and 356 fish farmers in Tharaka Nithi County respectively, with the farmers benefiting from construction of ponds, pond liners and predator control materials. The farmers are also expected to receive fingerlings and feeds through the programme.
There are 24 farmers groups in the county known as Smallholder Aquaculture Groups (SAGs), 12 Aquaculture Field Schools (AFS) and 46 youth groups known as Aquaculture Support Enterprise (ASEs).
The county has over 1590 fish farmers and expects around 500 farmers in the coming year.
